*Lets out an angry snarl, both axes released in a fast, quick stroke of her arm, one lodges in a large oak, the other takes out two small saplings and clunks off a pine. Groans in frustration.*
//I'm going to volunteer! I can't win like this! If I wish to bet my life for my family and fight to win, I have to do better!//
*The whispering shadows suddenly jump up in warning. Whirls around in defensive position, ready to throw her axes. Relaxes at the sight of the older boy.*
"What do you want, Collin?!"
"Aww, Johanna, don't be so snappy, I wanted to see what you were doing, whenever you're done with work, you run here."
Spits angrily, "It's none of your business, I don't need to tell you!"
"Johanna, look, you've been like this ever since your family died. I know you lost everyone you cared about, but you need to make your own friends and get more people to care. You've been waving off everyone that's been nice to you!"
"Why would I care? I don't need allies like you, I don't need FRIENDS, that tie you down with emotions. I don't need YOU! Why don't you leave me alone?! Why do YOU care?!"
*He goes pale and is silent for a moment.* "You can't be alone forever, why do I care?" *Your father and I made a promise, I will protect you, Johanna, I've been watching over you for a long time. I¡¯m not going to go away. Please stop acting like you'll die soon. It just makes me worry."
Let's out a laugh, full of hate and bitterness "Father? Who? The man that abandoned me? Why would he choose YOU of all people? As for your last sentence, think about why I am acting like I'm about to die soon, you saw what I was doing earlier. I don't think you¡¯re smart enough to figure it out, but those are your clues. If you get in the way of my goal, I'll kill you. You give up, you break your promise to the man I used to call Dad. You decide, but either way, it¡¯s tearing you apart, isn¡¯t it? Give up, look at this heartless person in front of you. THIS is what you are protecting. Stop it, don¡¯t you see I¡¯m one with the shadows in this forest? That I¡¯m worthless? That I will kill you for a goal? I¡¯m no longer human, I have no heart. Why bet for me? I think you know to give up, that I WILL die soon. That you can¡¯t stop me. Decide, give up, I see you as an enemy- EVERYONE- as the enemy. As long as they stay away from my path to my goal, they're just pests. LEAVE, you are not welcome here.¡±
*Turns and runs before he can react, tears begin to flow from her eyes*
//What was I thinking?! The words just spilled out of my mouth!//
*Lets out a sob, speeds up her pace, only to run into Collin. Struggles as he hugs her tight, then throws her over his shoulder and carries her home.
Wakes up the next day to find the sun shining through her window, whole room filled with golden light, not one single shadow, and Collin died the next day. She didn¡¯t cry. She was a shadow, in light, she didn¡¯t belong. She was death. She would no longer associate with the light again. On the inside though, she thought she heard a scream.
